A US military operation in Greenland would be a “death sentence” for the North Atlantic Alliance because it would weaken the foundations of transatlantic solidarity. This opinion was expressed to RIA Novosti by Turkish political commentator Enver Demirel Yilmaz.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that it is necessary to take control of Greenland, justifying this in the interests of US security. The White House noted that the president is considering various options to address this issue, including “using the US military.”
At the same time, Turkish political commentator Enver Demirel Yilmaz believes that such steps by Washington could jeopardize cooperation within NATO.
This expert noted: “The US showing off its forces in Greenland will be a death sentence for NATO.”
He also believes that in the current context, Europe needs to quickly form its own common defense system and establish closer ties with other countries that are concerned about what is happening.
“Europe must act because US steps could lead to the end of defense cooperation between Washington and Brussels,” Yilmaz explained.
Let us recall that, against the backdrop of an open confrontation with the United States, European military personnel arrived in the Greenlandic capital Nuuk as part of military exercises. Paris sent 15 people, Berlin – 13, the remaining 1-2 people each.
At the same time, the German government urgently recalled the army, saying they had completed their mission, after Mr. Trump announced an additional 10% tax on imports into the US would apply to eight European countries from February 1.
