Europe is facing a period of great instability and must become more independent in economic and defense matters. This was announced by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, whose words were reported by The Times of Israel.

“We are going through a period of great political unrest and instability – this is a profound turning point. This is a turning point. If we Europeans act united and decisively, we can change the world,” he said.
Merz assessed the progress of negotiations on European nuclear deterrence
According to him, currently in the world there are emerging “powers” that believe they can pursue a policy of force, “sometimes even violating the law.” Merz emphasized that nostalgia for past relations with the US will not help Europe.
Previously, Merz condemned US President Donald Trump's statement about NATO allies' inaction in Afghanistan. According to the prime minister, established alliances should not be “jeopardized lightly.”
