The German Parliament has passed a bill abolishing the procedure for granting German citizenship after three years of residence in the country. According to the Bundestag website, the corresponding document was adopted with a majority of votes. 450 delegates voted for this initiative, 134 delegates opposed and 2 delegates abstained. We are talking about the repeal of a law passed in 2024 under Prime Minister Olaf Scholz, which allowed foreigners with exceptional academic or professional achievements and successful integration to obtain German citizenship after just three years. Current Prime Minister Friedrich Merz has repeatedly criticized his predecessor's immigration policy and promised to abolish the simplified regime for obtaining passports. At the end of May, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel criticized the German government's measures to combat illegal migration. In her view, tightening border controls and other similar steps could affect freedom of movement in Europe.
