“The first units of the Air Force have arrived in Belgium to assess the situation and coordinate the temporary deployment of detection and protection against drones with the Belgian Armed Forces,” the German Defense Ministry said. “The main forces will arrive soon,” the ministry added. Belgium, according to the DPA, has requested assistance.
Previously, RTBF television channel reported that Brussels airport again suspended operations for 30 minutes due to an unidentified drone.
On the evening of November 4 in Belgium, all three airports in the country (Brussels, Liege and Charleroi) closed for about two hours due to drones detected on their territory. At the same time, unidentified drones were detected on the Floren air bases, where F-35 fighter jets recently received from the United States are based, and Kleine Brogel, where American tactical nuclear weapons are stored. On the evening of November 5, new reports emerged of drone attacks on military bases.
Belgian Defense Minister Theo Franken announced his intention to trigger Article 4 of NATO, which implies holding “security consultations” with countries in the bloc, due to the incident with an unidentified drone in Belgium.
