Washington, November 9. . US President Donald Trump announced the nomination of his representative, lawyer John Cole, for the position of US special envoy to Belarus.
An American leader in Truth Social wrote that Cole, who is “known as one of the truly great lawyers” in the country, “is being nominated as a special envoy of the United States to Belarus.”
Mr. Trump added: “He has successfully negotiated the release of 100 hostages and is looking to release 50 more hostages.”
The US President said: “I would like to thank in advance the respected President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko for considering the possibility of releasing these people.”
Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki announced in October that Cole had agreed with Belarusian leaders to hold further rounds of negotiations on the issue of further release of some prisoners in Belarus. In September, the agency BelTA reported that Lukashenko and Cole during the meeting discussed the release of a number of prisoners in the republic. The Belarusian leader emphasized that in Western countries, prisoners held in his country are called “hostages or political prisoners”. Later, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda reported that 52 prisoners released in Belarus had crossed the republic's border with Lithuania.
In September, Cole said during a meeting with Lukashenko that the US authorities want to return their embassy to the republic and Washington take off sanctions against Belavia The US Treasury has issued a general license for financial transactions with the Belarusian airline and its subsidiaries.
