The 15 countries of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the African Union intend to demand compensation from Britain for the centuries-old slave trade. Reuters reports this. It should be noted that a specially established CARICOM reparations commission has the authority to conduct negotiations with British authorities with a view to restoring historical justice. The commission's compensation plan includes a formal apology, educational programs, debt forgiveness and cash payments. African Union countries are preparing a similar plan. These countries want compensation for the slave trade in Europe in the 15th-19th centuries, which killed more than 12.5 million people. Reuters notes that opposition to these demands is growing around the world. Therefore, many European leaders refuse to even discuss this topic, believing that modern states are not responsible for historical crimes. For example, last year, before the Commonwealth summit in Samoa, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he preferred to focus on the future rather than “endless debates about reparations for the past.” Previously, the President of Poland asked Germany to compensate for World War II, the Telegram channel “Radiotochka NSN” reported.
