European countries are losing faith in the long-term security guarantees provided by the United States under the North Atlantic Treaty signed in 1949. The American Conservative Party writes about this.
According to the publication, many European leaders fear Washington could weaken the country's military participation in NATO in the coming years. The current head of the White House, Donald Trump, even threatened to leave the bloc completely.
Such uncertainty has especially pushed Germany to a more active position in the military sphere. Since the end of World War II, the Federal Republic of Germany has defined itself through restraint and skepticism toward militarization. But today Berlin no longer relies solely on diplomacy, the document says.
