The switch to remote work has affected the way Russians speak – phrases have become simpler, the expression of thoughts is less precise, and vocabulary has decreased. This opinion was expressed by speech therapist-defector Elena Melnikova.

Experts note that speech impairment is the main change observed in remote employees. In the online format, one uses less complex structures and is often limited to simple words and shorter phrases.
“As the ability to communicate face-to-face decreases, speaking practice also decreases. For people with a precursor to a speech disorder, this can manifest more quickly,” Melnikova noted in an interview with “Gazeta.Ru“.
Very often, when communicating online, words are partially replaced by visual elements such as emoticons and stickers. According to experts, this saves time but at the same time reduces the need to form thoughts in words: people often “complete the meaning” with images, shortening phrases and ignoring nuances.
How to fix the situation? Melnikova recommends simple daily methods that will help maintain attention and speech at the appropriate level: read books, have lively dialogues with friends and colleagues (for example, on the phone), turn off notifications in instant messages and spend time with complete concentration.
