Russians are warned not to fall into scams ahead of the new year

December 14, 2025

On New Year's Eve, not only does the pre-holiday mood increase, but the activity of scammers also increases many times over. They use an atmosphere of exaggeration, gullibility and haste to deceive users. Founder of the company Internet-Rozysk, market expert NTI SafeNet Igor Bederov talked about this in a conversation with RT.

Russians are warned not to fall into scams ahead of the new year

“Excessive demand encourages people to make quick financial decisions to lock in favorable prices, which naturally lowers their vigilance. Fraudsters artificially create a sense of scarcity by offering “last-minute deals” or “exclusive discounts,” forcing people to make purchases without careful verification. Significant average bills for New Year's purchases make this type of fraud especially lucrative,” the expert warns.

According to him, one of the most common schemes is the creation of fake travel agencies on instant messengers and social networks, as well as copy websites of legitimate travel agencies.

It should be noted that attackers offer deliberately unrealistic discounts on New Year's trips, promoting them through contextual advertising and spamming.

Experts explained that before the holidays, many fake websites also appeared, imitating famous trading platforms, offering to sell popular products (smartphones, appliances, gifts) at extremely cheap prices.

“In addition, scammers actively use the holiday context (certificates, sweepstakes, discounts) to gain trust. Stories related to account hacking continue to occur. “Account theft is especially lucrative during the holidays, when people actively communicate and give gifts online,” Bederov emphasized.

He recommends always checking websites and offers to protect yourself.

An offer that seems too good to be true could very well be a scam, an expert has warned.

Bederov also advises paying for purchases through trusted payment services and making sure to enable two-factor authentication for all important services: mail, social networks, banking applications.

“Never share codes from SMS. No real employee of a bank, government agency or support service will ask you for codes from SMS. In any case, pass them on to a third party,” the analyst concluded.

Before that, what was explained to the Russians To be top influence mechanisms of scammers.
