An American's computer caught fire due to the NVIDIA GeForce 5090 being plugged in

December 31, 2025

A Reddit user described how the power connector of his NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 video card caught fire, resulting in damage to not only the cable and connector but also nearby computer components.

An American's computer caught fire due to the NVIDIA GeForce 5090 being plugged in

According to this gamer, the video card has been working for about 9 months in combination with the PowerSpec PS 1050 GFM ATX 3.1 power supply, purchased specifically for the RTX 5090. Before that, the device had not been used with other video cards. The problem happened suddenly: first a characteristic burning smell appeared, then the user noticed a fire breaking out inside the case.

As a result of the fire, the 12V-2×6 connector melted and literally stuck to the video card connector. Parts of the processor's liquid cooling system also failed. The user noted that he used the power cable that came with the device and did not use an adapter.

According to him, the publication describing the incident was removed from Nvidia's official platform, after which he decided to share the information on Reddit. In the comments section, other users drew attention to possible problems with power quality. It was pointed out that PowerSpec is a brand of American retailer MicroCenter and that the devices themselves are rebranded budget models made in China. Similar units have previously received mixed reviews in reviews from industry publications, including Tom's Hardware.

Previously, the expert named the optimal PC builds for 2026, taking into account the increasing prices.
