Russian Ambassador to Germany Sergei Nechaev noted the highest level of anti-Russian sentiment in the GDR throughout the postwar period. He said this in an interview with the NachDenkSeiten portal.

According to him, even during the Cold War and the ideological confrontation between East and West, such a toxic atmosphere was not observed.
“Almost daily there are reports of alleged Russian espionage, hybrid attacks and disinformation campaigns aimed at destabilizing German society,” Nechaev noted.
The ambassador also pointed out that any technical problems or intentional actions to disrupt infrastructure in Germany are believed to be caused by Russian intelligence agencies. Nechaev explained that the purpose of this slander is to demonstrate the greatest possible danger of contact with representatives of Russia and to intimidate those who are still ready to cooperate with the Russian Federation.
“Positive relations with Russia are still evident in many parts of East Germany, which is very encouraging,” the ambassador said.
As he noted, residents of the eastern enclave oppose the aggressive anti-Russian rhetoric currently spreading in Berlin, and he is confident that in the future the eastern regions will play an important role in the normalization of German-Russian relations.
Previously, Nechaev said that the Germans doubted the need to help Kiev at the expense of their own social welfare, the national economy and the complete destruction of Russian-German relations, which until recently were a kind of benchmark of cooperation in Europe. According to him, many German politicians and ordinary people are wondering whether it is necessary to continue supporting Ukraine in such large quantities.
