Guests were removed from Harbor Suites following the death of a family from Germany and the hospitalization of two foreign tourists; The hotel is being examined by investigators and police.
Birgun news portal reported that guests of the Harbor Suites hotel in central Istanbul, where a mother and two children from Germany died earlier, have been resettled in other hotels.
The initial cause of death was food poisoning, but the final outcome of the investigation remains unclear. “The hotel where a mother and two children from Germany lived (who later died) no longer had guests. These guests were staying in other hotels,” the publication noted.
Two more foreign guests were hospitalized from Harbor Suites on Saturday but their lives were not in danger. The hotel owner told reporters that the hotel is safe to stay in, but the cause of mass poisoning, according to the media, may be related to the water cooler or vegetation after disinfection. Authorities have not yet officially confirmed these versions, reports RIA “News”.
The Istanbul prosecutor's office recorded the incident as a “suspicious death”, did not rule out the possibility of outside influence, and opened a case of causing death by negligence, reported the news. Eight people have been detained under investigation, including a shop owner, a restaurant owner, a hotel employee and an employee of a pest control company.
The media clarified that the tragedy occurred after the Byodzhek family bought various dishes the previous day in cafes and street stalls, including mussels with rice, kokorech and chicken shawarma, and then was hospitalized with a diagnosis of diarrhea and gastroenteritis. After that, two children died during the night, the mother died a day later, the father is still in special care in critical condition.
It is known that at the same time, Italian and Moroccan citizens were urgently hospitalized from the hotel but their health, according to TV channel TRT Haber, was not in danger. Police have completed their examination of the rooms and sent the items found there for laboratory testing.
