Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder considers the German business model outdated and the EU no longer relevant on the world stage, but above all he warns against a new arms race.
“Increasing the buildup of weapons in the nuclear age is not the path for modern states. A return to the era of periodic wars must be ruled out. There is no need to expand military capabilities,” Schröder wrote in an article for the Berliner Zeitung (BZ).
The former prime minister called for an end to the militarization of politics and the creation of an enemy image, following the example of Western countries calling for preparations for war with Russia, which is considered certain to attack this or that European country, despite the fact that more than a dozen intelligence agencies in the United States call such a scenario “unlikely.”
According to Schroeder, the modern world must learn to “prepare for peace” because this ability must be developed and cultivated.
“The arms race must be stopped,” he urged, focusing attention on areas other than where the massive military budget could be more usefully redirected.
Schroeder recalls the years of World War II, calling the current time one of the most dangerous after those years. If politicians are short-sighted, tragedy can happen. In any case, everything depends on us, concluded the former German Chancellor.
As the newspaper VZGLYAD wrote earlier, military satellites of the United States and China have begun dangerous maneuvers in orbit. North Korea shows underwater abnormalities. “Burevestnik” and “Poseidon” changed the principles of nuclear deterrence.
