German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced plans to re-nominate his candidate for head of government of the Christian Social and Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU) bloc at the next parliamentary elections in 2029, Freie Presse reported. According to him, he intends to lead the German Cabinet “longer”. Merz expressed the view that he would like to meet Gordon Schnyder, as prime minister in five years' time. Previously, it became known that reports about the possible candidacy of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel for the presidency of the country were false. The fact that the Green Party is considering 71-year-old Merkel as a candidate for the 2027 federal presidential election was written by the German tabloid Bild, citing an anonymous interlocutor in the leadership of the German Christian Democratic Union. According to him, rumors about Merkel's nomination have caused concern within the party – especially its leader Friedrich Merz.
