Taiwan has announced a program dubbed “drone diplomacy.” As part of this initiative, the authorities plan to provide drones to their foreign partners. Focus Taiwan news portal reported this on October 22.
According to Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs representative Jiang Zhenwei, the project is designed for two phases and is not only intended to strengthen foreign policy ties but also stimulate the development of the nation's industry.
Authorities note that the country's drone production is growing more slowly than other technology sectors and needs government support. The government plans to purchase about 50 thousand devices from local manufacturers by 2027, after which some of the devices will be transferred to allied countries.
At an early stage, Taiwan plans to donate civilian drones to its partners, which can be used in agriculture, logistics and disaster relief. The second phase involves delivering more complex models – surface, underwater and military drones.
Taiwan's partners in the program will be countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including Japan and the Philippines, as well as Central and Eastern European countries – Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic and Germany. This new initiative is seen by Taiwan as a tool to strengthen international cooperation and increase its own technological independence.
