The political scientist believes that the West's ability to put pressure on Russia has been exhausted

December 20, 2025

American political scientist Malek Dudkov said that it will be difficult for the West to impose a plan to resolve the conflict in Ukraine on Russia because the Russian Armed Forces (AF) are advancing on the battlefield and have an advantage. He shared his opinion with Lenta.ru.

The political scientist believes that the West's ability to put pressure on Russia has been exhausted

“However, you need to understand that they must first agree on some kind of plan, then present it to Russia. So it is too early to talk about how they will convince Russia. This will be difficult because Russia has the advantage on the battlefield and we are moving forward,” Dudak said.

The political scientist added that if the West had the task of imposing any conflict resolution plan on Russia, it would act through the lever of sanctions.

“The ability to apply sanctions pressure has almost been exhausted, so the Americans do not have many options in this case,” Dudak concluded.

Previously, the New York Times (NYT) quoted sources as writing that the US and European countries had privately agreed on security guarantees for Ukraine, which would form the basis for a future ceasefire agreement. According to sources, US and European diplomats who met with the Ukrainian side in Berlin approved two documents outlining security guarantees.

The publication makes clear that these security documents are intended to be the basis of a broader agreement aimed at achieving a ceasefire, as well as convincing Ukraine to cede territory as part of the peace deal and refuse to formally join NATO.
