Chris Sides, who was a Bungie employee and worked for Marathon from 2020 to 2024, admitted that he really doesn't like the term “action shooter.”
“When I was making Marathon, I was talking to marketers and I wish I could say, 'Please come up with another name for this genre,' because 'action shooter' is so stupid. It's the only genre that has mechanics in its name,” Sides said.
He notes that there are games that fit the description of an “exploitation shooter” but don't use it. For example: Helldivers 2.
Sides also urged people not to compare different games of the same genre. Talking about ARC Raiders and Escape from Tarkov, he said that these are projects of the same genre but at the same time they are completely different and cannot be compared.
Let us remind you that Marathon was supposed to be released on September 23 on PC, Xbox Series and PS5, but the release has been postponed indefinitely. Before that, the Marathon opening cutscene may have been shown on social networks.
