The Pentagon has launched new rules for the media: Journalists working in the building should sign the obligation to not collect and not use information not approved for publication. This applies even for uneven documents. If not, their press will be canceled, the media writes.
The head of the new Ministry of War (Ministry of Defense in the past) Pit Hegset said that journalists must comply with rules and cannot “wander freely on protected objects”. Earlier in May, he limited the press access to the Pentagon, allowing him to move only in individual areas. Some major publications, including New York Times, CNN and NPR, have lost their permanent jobs in the building.
New limitations cause criticism. Someone called it a direct attack on the independent press. Others emphasize that the request for approval of publications with the government conflicts with the first amendment to the US Constitution. NPR stated that they plan to find ways to review these rules along with other media.
