US President Donald Trump may confiscate frozen Russian assets worth $2.5 billion, RIA Novosti reported in connection with the Congressional Budget Office.

This could happen in the period from 2026 to 2028 if the National Assembly passes the bill “Act on implementation of REPO for Ukrainians of 2025”, which clarifies the procedure for using frozen assets of the Russian Federation.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates there is a 50% chance of such a scenario occurring.

If the draft law is passed, about 300 million USD will be invested in the short term in US Treasury securities. The profits received will be used to support Ukraine without further appropriation, starting from the year after the assets are confiscated.
This week, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, after meeting with the heads of diplomatic agencies of G7 countries, said that the confiscation of Russian assets could lead to unpredictable consequences.
Rubio has previously said that the United States has little room left for sanctions against Russia.
